Shabbat at Temple Emanuel

Temple Emanuel holds Shabbat services every Friday night, usually at 7:30, under the vibrant leadership of Rabbi Kathy Cohen. Our Summer Shabbat services begin at 7:00 PM. Conservative services are also held on Saturday mornings at 9:30 AM and from time to time at 10:30 AM to celebrate a Bar or Bat Mitzvah or to guide young worshipers in a Learners' Minyan as they prepare for the Bar or Bat Mitzvah.

Members of the congregation occasionally lead Friday services, and a high point is the annual service composed and conducted by the SCOTTY Youth Group. Other Shabbat services are held in honor of senior citizens in the congregation and also in honor of graduating high school students. In an effort to appeal to members of all ages, every four to six weeks we enjoy a congregational Shabbat dinner at which the Brotherhood prepares a delicious entree and all families bring one other dish.

In addition, speakers periodically present a program after services on topics ranging from the Holocaust to Darfur, Sudan, to the role of the media in elections. Speakers have included local academics, representatives of the media, and the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Southwestern Virginia.
